The application of advanced metallurgy has allowed boilers to operate at higher pressures and temperatures but generally speaking their designs have not changed much in the past 30 years. That is not true, however, of control systems, which now have the ability to use complex algorithms accurately in support of cyclic operation with only minor upsets. It only makes sense to exploit DCS technology to its fullest as it makes easier operation in compliance with regulations, regardless of the dynamics imposed by dispatch.
